Basic concepts and differences between industrial switch cascading and stacking

Last Updated on 2018-07-07 Hits:3613

First, the understanding of the basic concept:
Stacking is the connection between the backplanes, making several industrial switches a whole. Cascading is the connection of a port.
Cascading is sharing, and stacking is exclusive.
Cascading is connected to other industrial switches through a port of an industrial switch, and the stack is connected through the backplane of the industrial switch.
Although the number of ports can be expanded in both cascading and stacking, each industrial switch or industrial switch is logically still multiple networked devices after cascading, and several industrial switches or industrial switches after stacking are logically logical. Is a device that is managed by the network.
Second, the difference between cascading and stacking:
The industrial switches are cascaded through the Up-Link port on the panel. The Up-Link port is actually a reverse-connected RJ-45 port. Connecting the Up-Link port of one industrial switch to any RJ-45 of another industrial switch realizes the cascading between industrial switches. The Up-Link port eliminates the hassle of making crossover cables when connecting two industrial switches through the RJ-45 port.
Cascading features:
1. Using the RJ-45 port of the industrial switch;
2. Cascading cables are standard five types of twisted pairs;
3. The distance of the cascade is longer, up to 100 meters at 10 megahertz and up to 5 meters at 100 megabytes;
4. Industrial switches of different manufacturers can be cascaded with each other;
Insufficient cascading:
1. Since the signal is from an industrial switch to another industrial switch through the RJ-45 port, the encoding/decoding process has a long delay;
2. Must occupy two RJ-45 ports (one for each of the two industrial switches);
3. Users will lose performance/price ratio, which is more obvious for industrial switches with higher port costs;
4. The number of industrial switches allowed to be cascaded is small, 5 for 10 trillion, and 2 for 100 trillion;
The stacking of industrial switches connects the backbones of several industrial switches to form a large, logically single industrial switch.
Stacking features:
1. Stacking through a special stacking port, which cannot be mixed with other RJ-45s of industrial switches;
2. The stacking cable is defined by the manufacturer;
3. Stacking ports are defined by the manufacturer. Therefore, products of different manufacturers cannot be stacked on each other unless they are identical.
4. Because it is the backbone connection, the signal is transmitted between the industrial switches through the trunk instead of the RJ-45 port, so the response time is shorter;
5. In a 100 Mbps network, the number of stackable industrial switches is significantly larger than the number of cascadable;
Insufficient stacking:
1. Because it is the backbone, the requirements of the stack cable are as short as possible. Too long will affect the performance of the entire system.
2. Because it is connected to the trunk, if the stacking cable is short-circuited, the industrial switch will not work or the industrial switch will be damaged. Warning: Do not connect other signals, such as the signal from the RJ-45 port of the industrial switch, to the stacking port.
Stacking method of industrial switches:
Take a 8-core five-type twisted pair cable and cut it into a 50 mm segment. Each end is connected to a high-quality RJ-45 head. The one-to-one correspondence is the same: pin 1 pin 1, pin 2 pin 2... pin 8 The pin 8 is connected to the RJ-45 head by twisted pair. The same method is used to make two. The stacking stacks all the industrial switches together. The two lower stack ports of the industrial switch above are connected to the two industrial switches below. The upper stacking port, left to left, right to right, and so on, realizes the stacking of industrial switches.
caveat:
1. In an industrial switch stacking system, all industrial switches must be powered on to form an effective transmission data path. Even if the industrial switch is temporarily unused, the power should be turned on, otherwise network communication will be broken.
2. The stacking cable cannot be plugged in. Otherwise, the industrial switch may be damaged.
